Learning to travel with only a carry-on completely changed the way I experience trips. A few years ago, travelling with only a carry-on sounded impossible to me. I was convinced I’d forget something important, run out of clothes or simply regret not bringing “just one more outfit.”
So every trip started the same way: an overpacked suitcase, unnecessary stress and a lot of things I never actually used.
It took a few trips to realize that I wasn’t packing for the holiday I was taking — I was packing for every possible scenario that probably wouldn’t happen.
Packing Less Doesn’t Mean Giving Up Comfort
The biggest surprise was discovering how few clothes I actually wore.
No matter how many outfits I packed, I kept reaching for the same comfortable favorites. That’s when I started choosing versatile pieces in neutral colors that could be mixed and matched instead of packing completely different outfits for every day.
Layering also changed everything. A light sweater or jacket often replaces several bulky items and makes packing much easier without limiting your options.

A Few Small Changes Made a Big Difference
I stopped bringing “just in case” shoes and started travelling with one or two comfortable pairs that I knew I could walk in all day.
On longer trips, I simply do a quick load of laundry instead of carrying clothes for every single day. It takes less time than waiting for checked luggage at the airport and gives me much more flexibility.
Leaving extra space in my bag has become one of my favourite packing habits. Not because I plan to shop, but because I enjoy having room for a local coffee mug, a small handmade souvenir or something that reminds me of the trip.
Travelling Feels Easier
Packing lighter doesn’t just make your suitcase lighter — it makes the whole journey feel easier.
You move through airports faster, skip the baggage carousel, don’t worry about lost luggage and spend less time dragging heavy suitcases through train stations or narrow streets.
Instead of thinking about your luggage, you simply start enjoying the trip sooner.

It’s Not About Packing Less. It’s About Carrying Less Stress.
Today, I almost automatically reach for my carry-on, even for trips that last a week.
Not because I’ve become an expert packer, but because I finally understand that I need far less than I used to think.
Travelling lighter somehow makes the whole trip feel lighter too. There’s a quiet kind of freedom in knowing that everything you need is right there with you — and nothing more.
