Are you also confused with what to pack for a hike or just afraid not to forget anything important? I was in need of a simple beginner checklist for a day hike, being a beginner hiker myself. If you’re going on your first hike, packing can feel confusing. You donβt want to carry too much β but you also donβt want to miss something important. Here are some essential items that I bring every time.
Essential items
Here is a simple checklist that covers everything you actually need for a safe and enjoyable day hike.

Backpack (20β30L)
A small, lightweight backpack is perfect for day hikes. Look for:
- breathable back panel – very nice feature so the sweating is on the minimum. π
- comfortable straps – very important for a long hikes. You don’t even know it, until you wear one with non-comfortable straps.
Water
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. This is especially important if no natural source of drinkable water is available along the trail. Bring at least:
- 1.5 β 2 liters (short hikes)
- more if it is very hot outside
Proper shoes
This is the most important item, alongside water. Beginners should look for:
- good grip
- comfort over style
Snacks
Simple, high-energy foods will make a huge difference when having a full day outdoors activity. Always bring something such as:
- nuts
- protein bars
- fruit
- sandwich if it is a longer hike
Weather protection
Always bring:
- light jacket
- rain layer (just in case)
Sun protection
It is important throughout the year.
- sunscreen
- sunglasses and/or
- hat
Common beginner mistakes
We all make mistakes and it is only normal to do so. Still, it is good thing to try to avoid them as much as possible. π Here are some that I recognize people often do.

Bringing too much weight
While it is important to bring all essential things with you, and some more, bringing too much things will only ruin your day. You will struggle to carry the weight, already being on a hiking which can be exhausting activity by itself. Be smart about what you bring with you.
Brining not enough water
I cannot stress this enough. Be very cautious about how much water you bring with yourself. Especially if the track does not have sources of natural water along the way. The lack of water on the trail with no solution how to reach it fast when you become thirsty is not something you want to experience.
Wearing regular sneakers
One more thing you do not want to experience is wearing regular sneakers when the trail becomes difficult. And almost every trail will have parts with rocky terrain, steep incline or drop that will make you wish you wore suitable tracking shoes. Have in mind this can bring you in dangerous situations and your safety should be on the first place.
